6. Is it convenient to change an assembly designed with metric bolts with inches ones?

1. Why not all the bolts are totally threaded ?
Up
Answer:
a- According to the SAE Standard, the thread length shall be two times the diameter plus ¼. The Bolts that do not show compliance with the standard are design for specific use such as electrical fasteners.
b- The bolts that show compliance with DIN 933, 961 and ISO 4017, 8676 standards, follow the rule for the thread length 2 times diameter plus 6 mm
c- Bolts manufactured under DIN 931, 960 and ISO 4014, 8765 are completely threaded
d- It is not safe to use totally threaded bolts that are expose to shear over the threaded area.
2. Can a nut be used with a higher grade bolt ?
Up

Answer:
No, It is best to use always the same grade or class of the bolt as follows

Nut Gr 2 with Bolt Gr 2
Nut Gr 5 with Bolt Gr 5
Nut Gr 8 with Bolt Gr 8
Nut class 6 with Bolt 5.8
Nut class 8 with Bolt class 8.8
Nut class 10 with Bolt 10.9

3. Can the grade or class of a Bolt be distinguished by the color of the fastener ?
Up

Answer:

No, The proper way of identifying a bolt or a nut is by looking at the head and following the standards. In the bolts on top of the head there should be the Manufacturer "G" for Gutemberto and the marks accepted by SAE and ANSI for the nuts on the edges is the special mark. Special considerations for 2H nuts.

4. Can Bolts be re-used ?
Up

Answer:

No.Common practice of some people that fix cars, is to re use the bolts and nuts when the change spare parts. This is not a safe procedure because they are Forced to special tensión which can diminish the steel properties and hence the mechanical properties of the fastener. The price of a bolt or a nut is so low compared to the dangers, that is much safer to buy a new one.

5- Is it better to use a low pre-load than a high ?
Up

Answer:

None of the options is a good one. In both cases the the assembly will brake. We highly recommend use of a torq tool for proper load.

6. Is it convenient to change an assembly designed with metric bolts with inches ones ?
Up

Answer:

NO. It is very important to follow the designers characteristics. Is not very easy to match characteristics of both the measurement systems, hence , the products. .
